Rilla's Photo Enhanced - what do YOU think?

Jeff Johnson's enhancement of Rilla's picture.

The above image was kindly enhanced from the original newspaper image by Jeff Johnson. Here is what he has to say :-

"April 2, 2002. Hi Debbie,
Here is a copy of the Rilla Martin photo with the background removed and the animal coloured in. Look at the size of that paw! This is not a thylacinus as has been suggested. Does it show thylacoleo? I think it might, with the size of the chest and neck, the short snout (almost pig-like), lynx-type ears, and heavy stripes on the front of the animal, and the general over-all robust, cat-like look of the animal lead me to believe that Rilla photographed a remarkable animal. It sure looks like thylacoleo to this person. What do you think it shows?

One other thing that grabs me in this pic is that even though the mouth seems to be closed, teeth are showing, especially in the front, almost like a beak. Well, let me know what you think..........
Friends, Jeff Johnson"

OK, we'd like to hear some inputs on this. What do readers think?  Is the beast extracted from the noisy data a plausibled reconstruction of a living thylacoleonid? Or is the image a mere trick of light and shade?

Please post thoughts at the Quest's Forum.

I better mention that Jeff Johnson (dinoman@attbi.com) is a palaeo-artist and model maker. Check out his web site at http://home.attbi.com/~dinoman/
